SAN BERNARDINO, California (April 29, 2016) —The 6th Annual San Bernardino Valley College Athletics Golf Tournament was held Friday, April 15th at the Arrowhead Country Club. The event, presented by the San Bernardino Valley College Foundation, raised proceeds exceeding $35,000, which will benefit athletics and provide scholarships for San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) students. In addition to funds raised through the tournament itself, students and student athletes volunteered, selling various prize opportunity tickets to players and guests throughout the afternoon and evening. Local businesses and community members donated a large selection of prizes.
After registering, browsing prizes and purchasing opportunity tickets, the tournament began as the 112 players set off on the course. Golfers enjoyed several contests on the course throughout the day such as “Hole in One,” “Closest to the Pin” and “Longest Drive.” A hole-in-one car was donated by Hatfield Buick GMC of Redlands, but alas, no one won it this time. Golfers won other prizes, including vacation packages, high-end golf equipment, and shopping sprees. Taking first place in the tournament: Team 19 featuring Billy Sandlin, Vincent Holt, Jim Holland, and Abbey Haynes. After the winners were awarded their trophies, SBVC Director of Development and Community Relations Karen Childers and SBVC Foundation Golf Tournament Chair Rich Beemer held opportunity drawings and distributed prizes throughout the evening.
Special items were also placed for silent auction: an Insignia 48 inch television, an Ultra Complete Package golf set, a signed Orel Hershiser photograph, Dodgers and Angels baseball tickets, Augusta Cypress memorabilia, and more.
President of the SBVC Foundation, Lynda Savage, said that in addition to supporting San Bernardino Valley College students and athletes, “the best part (of the event) is so many youth volunteers.” Rich Beemer agreed that the student athletes added a meaningful dimension to the event, reminding golfers of the benefit of this tournament.
